With OneDrive, you can sync files between your computer and the cloud, so you can access your files from anywhere: your computer, your mobile device, and even through the OneDrive website at OneDrive.com. If you add, change or delete a file or folder in the OneDrive folder, the file or folder is added, changed or deleted on the OneDrive website and vice versa. You can work with the synchronized files directly in File Explorer and get access to your files even when working offline. Every time you log in, changes made by your user or other users will be automatically synchronized.

This article describes how to download OneDrive Sync App and sign in with your personal account, or with a business or education account, to start syncing. If you use Microsoft 365 Apps for Business, you can also sync files from SharePoint sites. If you are not using Microsoft 365 Apps for Business, see Sync SharePoint files with the OneDrive for Business sync app (Groove.exe).

If your computer is running Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, the OneDrive desktop app comes preinstalled. (That’s why the OneDrive desktop app settings file won’t appear if you try to install it). A setting is installed that allows you to use Office to work on OneDrive documents with other people at the same time, although no other features are installed.

Note: The OneDrive application is not compatible with Windows XP. If you try to install it on a computer running Windows XP, you will get an error message “OneDriveSetup.exe is not a valid Win32 application”. For more information, see OneDrive System Requirements.

Tip: If you use a large amount of storage space on OneDrive, it may take a long time to download all your files the first time you install the OneDrive application. To see how you might be able to improve transfer speed, see Maximize upload and download speed.

When you install the OneDrive for Windows desktop app on a computer, it appears on the OneDrive website in the left pane under the Computers category. You can then access files and folders on the computer that are not stored in the OneDrive folder. When browsing a computer remotely, you may be prompted for a verification code. To remove a computer from OneDrive, go to the OneDrive web page, select the computer and then Remove Computer.
